Maze Gordon Ramsay

London, April 29, 2012.

We had lunch at the Maze Gordon Ramsay (1-Star Michelin) on our 2nd day in London.  We made an unglamorous entrance greeting the hostess with our rain-soaked coats and umbrellas.  Yes, we did not come in a fancy car, we are tourists (well except for my cousins – the 2-week old Londoners) and we walked.

We were then escorted to the dining area by the same hostess after leaving our coats at the cloak room.

The whole restaurant was rather empty to my surprise.  Only a few tables were occupied even during peak lunch hours.

The very well-mannered maître d’ came over to our table as soon as we were seated, he made sure that we were comfortable and help us understand the menu.  I liked him even more after he complimented my Hermès bangle and my Lumix GX-1 camera…lol!

All of us ordered a set of the 4-course Menu (£25++). Selwyn doubted the portion so he ordered an additional 5th course of Lamb rump, Slipcote cheese, samphire, navet, wet garlic (£16.00).

We had our photos taken while waiting for our food to come.  For all I know, the maître d’ just wanted to test my camera (kidding!) since he told us that he was actually deciding whether or not to get one himself.

We were served a few types of bread but we ended up re-filling it with these bread sticks (above) while waiting.  It was really good but not better than the one I had from Tom Colicchio’s Riverpark in New York – it is still the best bread that I’ve had in a restaurant so far.

Our dishes arrived in different orders depending on the food combination we had selected individually.  Gar & Zi opted to include a dessert for their meal while Me & Sel did not.  Some of our dishes overlapped each other so I will just list everything down all in one go.

These are the dishes that we tried that day…

Cauliflower velouté, smoked haddock, potato salad

Sea bass ceviche, nori seaweed, passion fruit vinaigrette

Pressed chicken and foie gras, blood orange, hazelnuts

Pork dumplings, radish, aromatic mushroom broth

Sea bream, fennel, green olives, radish, citrus vinaigrette

Braised feather blade of beef, pomme purée, shimeji mushroom, togarashi spice

Banana and date parfait, butterscotch, walnuts

Apple terrine, rhubarb and custard ice cream

After all the dishes were served, the waiter came over to asked Selwyn whether he still wants his 5th course of lamb, obviously he felt we had enough.  It was very kind gesture, instead of wasting food in the end.  Selwyn surrendered and had requested to cancel his order.

Overall experience was very good – service, food & ambiance.  I just felt that the food can be a tad less salty, but then again this is just my personal preference since I have a very low tolerance with salt.

Gareth & Zizi looking happy after a very satisfying meal.  Thank God the rain stopped after lunch.
