Toby's Estate Cafe Singapore

Had breakfast at Toby’s Estate last Sunday morning. The weather was really good, gentle morning breeze over blue skies and like most early morning diners, we also wanted to be seated outdoors to enjoy the good day.

Selwyn’s Cappuccino (S$5)

It was the coffee that saved our morning because the food  sucked was disappointing.  First came Selwyn’s Eggs Benedict w/ Prosciutto (S$14) and it looked like this.

Eggs Benedict – Attempt #1

You don’t need to be a genius to realise that something went wrong with eggs, even by just looking at it. Apart from the deformed looking eggs on the plate, it also very obvious that the yolks have been cooked all the way through. Poached yeah?

Selwyn gave it the benefit of the doubt and cut right through it and – we were right! – a harden yolk that resembles a soft boiled egg.

Me: I think there is something wrong with the eggs (showing the yolk to the server).

Server: Hmm, so you want it more runny? (pointing to the soft boiled yolk).

Are you out of your mind? What “more runny”? Its not even runny at all! (In my head)

Me (Sarcastic): No, I don’t want it “more runny”! Its SUPPOSED to be runny!

Server: Oh yeah, then took the plate back to the kitchen.

It scares me that the waitstaff doesn’t even know their menu and the chef, trying to save the cost for 2 eggs by sending the plate out. Anyway the second plate came out and it looked like this.

Eggs Benedict – Attempt #2

Visually, the eggs looked correct this time, but notice the 3/4 brioche under egg number 2, yes, they just changed the eggs and re-used the rest of the items from plate #1.

Just because we are nice, we did not send the 2nd plate of eggs benedict back, but I am definitely very disappointed with the standards they (Toby’s Estate) are showing me.

I was hoping that my order would be better. Well it was not. Yet another disappointment.

Toby’s Breakfast (S$16)

The scrambled eggs were undercooked and runny in some parts. The bacon looked like it came out of the microwave, it was pale and had more fats than meat. The mushrooms were bland, it was under seasoned and tasted like it was boiled.

I only liked the 2 slices of brioche and the cherry tomatoes out of everything on the plate. But thank goodness I liked something!

I am actually lost for words. The whole experience was just too stressful on a Sunday morning.

Conclusion: Toby’s Estate – good for coffee but definitely not for food.

I am sure there will be more rants from other food bloggers unless they manage to make some adjustments in the kitchen – like NOW. Enough said.
