Last Sunday, we visited The White Rabbit for brunch. The White Rabbit is a restaurant and bar housed in a restored chapel located off the Dempsey Area in Singapore.

What I liked most about The White Rabbit is the greens that surrounds the area – the charm of Dempsey I reckon.

The White Rabbit retains much of the old chapel’s architecture – the high ceiling, the stained glass, the arch and the exposed beams.

The backyard was transformed into an outdoor seating area and it is where the bar is located. I am sure it is more relaxing during the afternoon when the sun is less “in-your-face” – lol a very common Asian trait, opposite than that of our counterparts, that loves the sun very much.
So far, so good – the ambiance was perfect and the service was excellent, then came our orders. I went for the pasta and Sel, the eggs.

Fettucine alla Carbonara
bacon, pork sausage, cream, soft cooked egg (S$28)

English “Fry-Up”
eggs any style, thick cut bacon, house-made pork and spinach sausage,
sautéed field mushrooms, tomatoes, brioche bun, herb salad (S$24)
Let’s pause here and let’s compare the description (on the menu) of the eggs against what we got. From the description it looks like we will be getting a full plate but instead, we got something very tiny and sad. The word “recommended” beside the description did not help either.

The plate from another angle.
I am not even going to attempt to re-write the descriptions but I am sure you understand where this is heading…

Cappuccino (S$6)
After our savoury meals, Sel still wanted something sweet and ordered the Crêpes Suzette. At The White Rabbit, the Crêpes Suzettes are typically served tableside.

I must admit, it was very entertaining to see the process unfold right before you.

Crêpes Suzette grand marnier, flambéed tableside (S$18)
The dessert was amazing, the flavours were well-balanced and it all worked harmoniously together in our palate – a good end to a mediocre start.

I decided to leave my thoughts on the carbonara last. My carbonara was really good, I liked the sauce as much as the pasta, however, I think there was something wrong with the soft-boiled egg that went with it. My tummy is very sensitive to foreign bacterias and the reaction is very immediate.
I highlighted this to the manager (not because I wanted to get a free meal) to let the kitchen know for the benefit of the rest that orders the carbonara. The manager politely apologised, offered me a pot of tea (of which I declined) and offered to take the dish out from our tab (which in the end, I accepted).
There will never be a perfect kitchen because we are all human, in the end it is always the capability of that certain someone to ensure that everything is resolved and no one else is put into harms way. I really liked how they handled my situation and I commend the staff for that.
So till next time!
